What is Hackertube?
Hackertube is a video discovery site associated with videos recommended in Hacker News discussions. If you are looking for the original tool, visit Hackertube at hackertube.org ↗. Its public navigation includes search, categories, playlists, liked videos, history, and watch later.
HackerTubeVideo.org is a separate, independent project. Here, we index YouTube links from public Hacker News comments and link back to their source conversations. This guide and our directory are not operated by, affiliated with, or endorsed by the original Hackertube project.
What is the connection between Hackertube and Karpathy?
Andrej Karpathy introduced Hackertube in his October 31, 2026 blog post ↗. He describes asking Claude to build a video site from recommendations in Hacker News comments after becoming dissatisfied with YouTube’s recommendations. The original project is at hackertube.org; the blog explains its development and offers a data export for others to build their own versions.
Karpathy’s original tool and this directory use different collection and ranking methods. Figures, features, and development claims in his post describe his project. Our About page documents how this directory works.
Where can I access Hackertube?
Open the original Hackertube website ↗ to use that tool. To explore this directory instead, start on our homepage. The two sites have separate catalogs and features; figures and update schedules on this site describe our own directory.
How to get started with this directory
Start with Top videos to find videos with repeated mentions or links from highly scored discussions. Open New videos for recent HN mentions, or use the search field to find a title, channel, or subject. Topic, conference, and year links offer other ways into the archive.
Follow a video to YouTube, or open its detail page where available. Use the source-comment link to read why someone shared it. A recent mention can point to an older video: the mention date and the video’s upload date describe different events.
Review considerations: is it useful for you?
Our assessment of the directory approach is that its main value is context: a link shared during a technical conversation can help you discover material you would not have searched for. If you enjoy talks, tutorials, demonstrations, or documentaries, a discussion-led directory can be a useful starting point.
The tradeoff is coverage and selection bias. People posting on Hacker News choose what gets shared, so a directory built from those links cannot represent every subject or viewpoint. A mention is not a verified endorsement, and popularity does not establish accuracy. Read the original discussion and check the creator’s sources when a claim matters.
In our implementation, the archive is incomplete, topic and conference matches are inferred from titles, and mention counts reflect only indexed comments. Lists refresh every 30 minutes, but that does not guarantee new collection every 30 minutes. Our sources and coverage notes explain the collection process.
How does it relate to YouTube?
This directory helps you discover YouTube videos through Hacker News conversations. Videos remain with their creators on YouTube. We link to YouTube and provide playback on eligible detail pages; we do not download or rehost the video files. Availability can change at the source.
Where can I find Andrej Karpathy on YouTube?
For his own AI lectures, visit Andrej Karpathy’s YouTube channel ↗, linked from his personal website ↗. His site points learners to Neural Networks: Zero to Hero for technical study and to general-audience videos about large language models. The channel contains his teaching; Hackertube helps people discover videos from many creators.
You can also search indexed video titles for Karpathy or explore our AI videos mentioned on Hacker News. Search matches video titles only, so it can miss his lectures when his name is absent from the title. It is not a complete list of his uploads.
HackerBooks and Hackertube: books or videos?
HackerBooks ↗ is a separate tool for finding books mentioned in Hacker News comments. In its Show HN launch discussion ↗, the creator says Karpathy’s Hackertube inspired the project. Choose it when you want books, and Hackertube when you want videos. A mention can be praise or criticism, so follow the source discussion before treating an item as a recommendation.
Sources and scope of this guide
The original-site link and navigation labels were checked against hackertube.org ↗ on . We have not completed an end-to-end test of its playback, account, or saved-video features. The review considerations above are our editorial assessment of discussion-led video discovery, rather than a user-rating aggregate or a hands-on review of every original-site feature.
