A note on the index

About

A way to find the videos hiding in the conversation.

Start with the comments.

Some of the most interesting links on Hacker News never make it to the front page. They appear in a reply: a talk that explains an idea, a demonstration that makes something click, or a documentary worth an evening.

HackerTubeVideo.org collects YouTube links from public HN comments and gives them a place to be discovered. A mention means a commenter shared the link; it does not imply that every commenter, or Hacker News itself, endorses the video.

Where the data comes from

Comments and story details come from the public HN Search API by Algolia ↗. Video titles and channel names come directly from YouTube’s oEmbed metadata. Each video links back to a source comment so you can read the surrounding context yourself.

Repeated links in a single comment count once. If the same video appears in different comments, each comment contributes a mention. Videos that YouTube identifies as unavailable are excluded from the directory. A mention count reflects the comments indexed so far, rather than a complete count of every historical mention.

Freshness and coverage

The directory is growing as comments are indexed and video metadata is checked. Lists refresh every 30 minutes. Hourly collection is the intended update cadence; automatic scheduling is not active in this initial release. Older discussions are added in batches, so the archive is incomplete.

The latest indexed mention among available videos is .

Creators keep their work.

All videos belong to their creators. We link to YouTube and use official thumbnails. We do not download, rehost, or store video files. Comment text is not reproduced in this directory.
